UN CEDAW China

In our submission to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), we focus on the urgent and pervasive issues faced by North Korean women in China. Forced into marriages due to human trafficking, these women bear children in a country where they have no legal status. Our report sheds light on their harrowing experiences and calls for urgent change and protection under the principles of CEDAW.

Risk of Repatriation and Forced Marriage

We outline the threat of forced repatriation faced by North Korean women residing long-term in China, often as a result of marriages due to human trafficking. We call on China, a CEDAW State Party, to provide protection and support to these women, addressing the unique vulnerabilities they face.

Temporary Residence Permits

Our report demands equality in healthcare provision for North Korean women with temporary residence permits. We urge the end of invasive surveillance measures against these women, calling for privacy, security, and transparency from the Chinese government in accordance with CEDAW principles.
